| Titling, Bonding & Tax: | |
| Out of State Purchases | If you're in this situation, you're lucky. MORE |
| Bonding: | -- Bob Hunter 344-7894. I called him about my GG from Colorado... he said to try and get some sort of registration from the previous owner. If you can't do that, go the bond route. A $6k bond (for a bike valued at $3k) would be about $175-180. -Bob C -- Someone got a bond for an '01 Beta for $50 from their insurance agent -- Our car insurer will furnish a 3-year, $6k bond for about $90 (Bob C.) |
| VIN Numbers: | Trials bikes don't have matching motor VIN numbers, just frame numbers. MVD may say this is mandatory. Clay has dealt with Greg (see below) who knows the right thing to do in such a case. |
| Private MVD Offices: | -- Greg at MVD Specialists (323-6683) has been very helpful -- Clay's titled 3 bikes there and highly recommends Greg. |
| Tax: | A recent law change: MVD will charge tax based on the LARGER of the Bill of Sale amount, or the Blue Book. |
| Education: | |
| New Mexico | No approved courses being offered in the state. |
| Oregon | Online Course Thanks to Stephen Lee for finding this. You'll get a temporary card online, then the regular card in the mail. -- Word is that a G&F representative said it'll meet the NM requirement, we're waiting on written confirmation of this. -- Thanks to Chris J. for finding this. It looks like the OR course would be accepted. Here's a link to the entire regulation. -- The consensus is: Take it! You'll get a certificate which might come in handy. Also keep a copy of this regulation in your glovebox. |

Tax |
A sign at MVD Express says that for private party to private party transfers they are required to charge tax on the average wholesale value of the vehicle NOT the amount listed on the Bill Of Sale. - Clay When I registered my Connie, the lady in Moriarty used the Blue Book value (I think they may use something like 80% of bb) because that was less tax. - Bob |
Insurance |
They may tell you that you need proof of insurance. So I had to go away and buy some. I was later informed that I did not need any for an OHV. They then said I should have asked for a supervisor for clarification. Well if I knew that was an option I would have done so. Now you know. -Mike |
Fees |
Registration $53 / two years (the tip of the iceberg...) |
Clay's Experience: |
If you have an MSO in your name and an invoice from the distributor you are good to go. Unfortunately, in my case, the Sherco Serial Numbers did not conform to the NCIC Stolen Vehicle system so I have to get a VIN inspection for them to be able to get the title. If you purchased your bike from someone out of state and that state does not require licensing of off road vehicles, all you need is a bill of sale and a VIN inspection. In that case there is no requirement for a bond. |
| One thing I forgot, for the out of state transfer an Affirmation Certifying Ownership is also required. | |
| 2 out of 3 bikes are now registered through Greg at MVD Specialists (323-6683). It cost a little more ($21.00 per transaction plus $25.00 per VIN inspection) but it was worth it to deal with someone who is knowledgeable. | |
| OSET's | Nothing at all definitive about this. See Chris's writeup 7/18/09 Bob C.'s been pursuing this, no luck. Conflicting info from the state. |
| Bikes < 100cc | Rumors they're exempt, but nothing reliable. See Chris's writeup |
| Bikes < 50cc (Mopeds) | 7/11/09 Bob C. got more from MVD writeup Someone was told by DMV that the mopeds-don't-need-to-be-titled law (Chapter 17, Section A Mopeds) that was furnished to us by DMV was recently changed. |
